George Liston Bass, Jr.

Dr. George Liston Bass, Jr., husband of Peggy Crumley Bass, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the age of 86. He was born in Columbia, SC on September 6, 1938 to the late Billye Bridges Bass and George Liston Bass, Sr.

He was named South Carolina Physician of the Year in 2015 and Spartanburg Physician of the Year in 2014. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina, he served 22 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of Captain. Dr. Bass’s greatest priorities were his faith, his family, his patients, and his friends. He found great joy in volunteering at St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, where he served as medical director for several years. He could often be found reading, playing golf, or cheering on Gamecock football. He loved the Lord deeply, singing in the Trinity United Methodist Church choir and participating in approximately 30 mission trips throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Peggy Crumley Bass; children, Ashley Bass, Brian Bass, Selena Bass Turnipseed (David), Jordan Bass (Heidi), Brantley Bass Beeler (Jeff); and grandchildren, Bevin Bass, Brinn Bass, Sydney Turnipseed, Laney Turnipseed, Owen Bass, Hudson Bass, Lola Beeler, and Lenora Beeler.

Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 PM on Friday, June 6, 2025 at J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home & Crematory, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376.

Memorial services will be 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by Rev. Ricky Howell.
